Canon EOS Rebel T8i review | Digital Camera World

Posted on 25/02/2023 by ◦ Views: 330x ◦ Category: Electronic

We’ve been waiting to test the Canon EOS Rebel T8i since it was first announced back in February 2020. But the global pandemic meant that global supply has stopped;  however, while still grappling with weekly challenges and evolving limitations, Canon managed to finally release the Rebel T8i.

The Canon EOS Rebel T8i (also sold as the EOS 850D in other countries) is positioned as an all-around camera for enthusiasts rather than a true entry-level DSLR, although it’s equally tempting for existing Canon users stepping up from entry-level cameras like the Rebel T6 or T7.

We fully tested the Rebel T8i with the EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens, and the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (the latter is also an option for the Rebel T8i kit), in cases a variety of shots from dark forests to bright countryside, and portraits to close-ups of plants.

    Important features

Canon is committed to providing photographers with easy ways to share photos online, so the EOS Rebel T8i includes 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy so you can connect to your iOS or Android device via the Canon Camera app Connect to edit and share high-definition quality photos.  From there, content can be downloaded to a smart device, reviewed and posted to social media or shared with friends and family.

The Canon EOS Rebel T8i is a lightweight, flexible and connected DSLR, powered by Canon’s fast DIGIC 8 processor and capable of 7fps continuous shooting.  It has Canon’s tried and tested 24.1-megapixel Dual Pixel CMOS APS-C sensor, but what sets the Rebel T8i apart from the older T7i is its Intelligent Tracking (iTR) autofocus technology, and its new movie capability. 4K.  However, it is important to note that while 4K may be new to Canon DSLRs at this price point, mirrorless cameras in the field have been 4K capable for at least one camera generation already.

iTR AF aims to improve focus when using Face Tracking AF and the new Eye Detection AF in Live View, to help you take the best photos with sharp eyes to bring your subjects to life.

When shooting ‘traditionally’ using the viewfinder (showing 95% coverage) autofocus tracking on the Rebel T8i gains 45 points across all AF modes, as well as Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

The T8i body design is compact but comes with top and rear dual control dials for both shutter speed and aperture.  As part of Canon’s EOS system, you can use any EF or EF-S lens, and you can add a Speedlite flashgun for more lighting than the built-in pop-up flash.

By the nature of the camera in this field, the T8i can shoot uncompressed RAW files, giving you more control when editing your photos, but there is also a C-RAW format that will produce smaller file sizes that almost double the continuous shooting saver from 40.  75 photos.

In terms of movie recording, the Rebel T8i can record in Full HD up to 60 fps, or 4K UHD resolution up to 25 fps.  There are also detailed settings for time-lapse movies and automatic scene selection.  To combat the ‘jittery shake’ associated with handheld movie shooting, the Rebel T8i includes 5-Axis Movie Digital IS, for smooth, controlled video capture.

The Rebel T8i is available body-only, or with the venerable Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM kit lens, giving you a focal range flexible enough to shoot everything from wide-angle to portrait.  .

    Build and manage

In a body of only 515g, the Rebel T8i feels light for a DSLR, and even with the large EF-S 18-135mm lens attached it is easy to hold and shoot, with little risk of hand or arm pain, even compared to the big one.  Canon DSLRs like the 90D have an EF 24-105mm lens attached.

To give you more flexibility for shooting from challenging locations, the Rebel T8i has a 3-inch Vari-Angle touchscreen, which we found can be positioned at almost any angle for more creativity.

The Rebel T8i also comes set up with an easy-to-use Guided interface, which explains features such as how the focus mode can be used to blur the background of your subject or keep the whole area in focus.  But there’s always Canon’s traditional menu system if you’d like to have more precise control over settings.

In the dial mode you have access to the usual exposure shooting modes (manual, scene priority, shutter priority and automatic program) as well as fully automatic Scene Intelligent Auto plus, and various Creative filters such as Grainy B/W, i -Fish-eye Effect.  and the Miniature Effect.  As with all of Canon’s EOS entry-level DSLRs, there are also scene modes that are useful options for beginners who need help in certain shooting situations.

    New AF ON button

The Rebel T8i gets a new, dedicated AF ON button on the back that has long been a favorite on high-end Canon EOS DSLRs like the EOS 90D, EOS 7D Mark II, and professional full-frame cameras like the EOS 5D Mark IV.  This is a small but welcome addition as it can be used for Back Button autofocus, leaving the Shutter Button to only measure when half pressed, and taking a picture when fully pressing the button.

The smaller Quick Control Dial is better than the four basic buttons surrounding the Set button on the T7i’s rear panel.  However, the dial is smaller than that on the older EOS 77D and the higher-end EOS 90D.  We found it tricky to use accurately when dialing in Exposure Compensation when shooting in landscape and key shutter modes.  But since you can access all the settings you need through the touch screen, we will usually just touch the screen, press the Q button and touch and adjust some settings that way.

Focusing using the touch screen in Live View offers the greatest control of focus and accuracy – there are no surprises when shooting still images in Live View mode, as you have 143 points in automatic mode or 3975 points in manual selection, thanks to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

With the smaller EOS body comes a small LP-E17 battery that Canon says will last for 800 shots using the viewfinder, or just 310 shots using Live View on the touchscreen.  It’s half the size of the LP-E6 batteries found in larger bodies like the EOS 7D Mark II.

A small point, but we’re disappointed that there’s no specific setting for Contrast Alert so any overexposed areas in photos shine when reviewing shots on the LCD.  For that you need to press Info when reviewing images to bring up the Histogram view, which makes the image itself smaller on the screen, then the exposed areas will light up to color it, so you can darken your exposure and shoot.

    Performance: Static

The Rebel T8i inherits the Intelligent Tracking (iTR) autofocus we’ve seen in Canon’s professional camera range, thanks to its use of Canon’s 220,000 Pixel RGB+IR calibration sensor.  This works by exchanging high-resolution automatic exposure data with the AF sensor, making iTR AF fast, responsive and precise – perfect for capturing fast-paced sports, wary wildlife, and kids who won’t sit still.

Shooting action using a 7fps burst rate, Auto Selection AF point selection, and AI Servo AF, with the EF-S 18-135mm lens in shutter mode at 1/500 second (at f/5.6 and ISO 3200), the Rebel T8i did a reasonably good job of focusing on the children quickly running towards us – one of the trickiest shots to capture, as the focus distance changes rapidly.
